What Is the Next Business Day? How to Count It

What is the next business day?

The next business day is the next day an organization is open for normal business, usually Monday through Friday, excluding observed holidays. If today is Tuesday and there is no holiday, the next business day is Wednesday. If today is Friday, it is usually Monday. A business day is not the same as the next calendar day or a 24-hour period.

How do you count the next business day?

Start with the organization’s business calendar, then move to the next day it operates. Weekends and observed holidays do not count when they fall outside that schedule. For example, if Monday is an observed holiday, the next business day after Friday is Tuesday. If an organization operates on Saturdays, however, Saturday may count for that particular service.

The time you place a request matters, too. A stated cutoff determines whether an order or request is received on the current business day or the following one. If the cutoff is 3 p.m. and you submit something at 4 p.m. on Thursday, processing may begin Friday. If Friday is a holiday, processing may begin Monday instead.

What does “next business day” mean for an order?

For an order, “next business day” can describe a processing date, a shipping date, or a delivery target. Those are different milestones. “Ships next business day” generally means the order is scheduled to leave after processing; it does not promise that the package will arrive that day. “Next-business-day delivery” describes a delivery service, subject to its cutoff, eligible locations, and operating calendar.

Before choosing a time-sensitive option, identify which milestone the promise covers and note any order cutoff. If you are planning a launch, restock, or other deadline, give yourself room for holidays and carrier schedules. Our team favors putting dates alongside business-day estimates whenever possible: “Tuesday, June 10” is easier to plan around than “in one business day” alone.

FAQ

Does an order placed after the cutoff count as placed that business day?

It may be recorded that day, but its processing window usually starts on the next business day. Use the stated cutoff and processing terms to determine the expected timeline.
